Open Call to share your stories!

Dear friend of SAFE,

·         Does your loving family include members of the LGBTQ+ community?

·         Do you believe all types of Singapore family should be celebrated?

·         Do you wish Singaporeans to better understand the relationships that LGBTQ+ people have with their partners and family members?

·         Do you feel left out by the State’s definition of family?

·         Do you wish to affirm your LGBTQ+ family members by sharing stories about your relationships and family life?

·         Do you have stories about your family from the perspective of a person who identifies as LGBTQ+ whether every day or extraordinary?

·         Do you wish to share your hopes and dreams for your non-heteronormative family or family members?

If you've answered YES to one or a few of the above, we would love to hear from you!

We are SAFE Singapore (Supporting, AFfirming and Empowering our LGBTQ friends and family). We are parents, families and friends of LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning/Queer) persons, who believe in a society that accepts, affirms and empowers everyone to participate fully in it, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. Follow us https://www.facebook.com/SAFESingapore/

We are inviting you to share stories of real, lived experiences of different types of families in Singapore, in particular families that comprise members of the LGBTQ+ community. We hope to publish these stories in the near future.

We welcome your stories around these key themes:

  • Families of origin: where we come from, the family members we grew up with; who accepted us, or not, when we choose to come out to them; and the journeys to appreciation, or not
  • Families of choice: the families we form, with people we care about, including partners, friends, and other bonds formed through community and social kinship
  • Rainbow families: the families we create, through marriage, childbirth, surrogacy, fostering, and adoption.

Whether or not you’re out, you can use pseudonyms and remain anonymous when your story is published.

You don’t have to be LGBTQ+ either, we wish to receive stories from allies, particularly parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins.

You can choose to write your own story, have someone write it with you or interview you and write it for you.

If you believe you have a story to share, please fill up a short survey via this https://bit.ly/WAFopencall

If you have any questions, or would like to find out more, please get in touch for a no obligations chat & we can take it from there, email safesingapore@gmail.com

Also, we will be grateful if you could pass on this Open Call to anyone else you think might be able to help.

Thank you for reading this,
